Sarah T. Reed Elementary Playground

KaBOOM! - Rebuilding School Playgrounds Partner.
qubo Channel - Full Funding Partner for Sarah T. Reed Elementary School

Working with the national non-profit playground builder, KaBOOM!, a community partner and with design input from the kids themselves, we have a chance to fund and actually re-build some of these important, community play spaces. Thanks to the contributions from qubo Channel, an ION Media Network, we are thrilled to announce that a playground is underway at Sarah T. Reed Elementary School.

We are still looking for volunteers so make sure to tell your friends to also sign up and volunteer.

Volunteer FAQ

  • Volunteer Transportation: All volunteers will load busses traveling to and from Baby Reed Elementary School. Please be sure you enter the bus that has a sign outside reading “Qubo/ION Media/Sarah T. Reed Elementary”.

  • Waivers: While on the bus you will be asked to sign a waiver and present that at the registration tables at the school. Every volunteer must have a signed waiver to enter the site.

  • Team Assignments: Upon arrival at the school, you will be given your team assignment. Assignments are truly random and will not be made according to corporation. This is truly an industry-wide project, so plan to bond with some new colleagues!

  • Volunteer End of Day: By 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 17, all volunteers will be arriving at the Morial Convention Center via bus. The actual playground will take approximately 6 hours to build.

  • Ribbon Cutting Ceremony: The qubo/ION Media Network playground build will conclude with a ribbon cutting ceremony that will start promptly at 3 p.m. All volunteers will be present. The playground must sit for 72 hours before it can be used.

  • What Should I Wear? We recommend that volunteers dress in comfortable weather-appropriate clothing that they do not mind getting irreversibly dirty. Closed toe shoes are required. Qubo Channel will be handing out T-shirts to all volunteers before the day begins. The project will proceed rain or shine. We ask is that volunteers bring an energetic spirit, challenge themselves, motivate others, and have some fun!

  • Personal Belongings: Please do not bring purses and other valuables to the build project. There will not be a secure place for your belongings.

  • Will Volunteers be Fed on Build Day? Yes-- a well-fed volunteer is a happy volunteer! There is a special committee that has been working hard in advance of our arrival, breakfast, lunch and drinks to keep everybody hydrated and energized throughout the day will be provided. Breakfast is served before the kick-off ceremony and lunch takes place in shifts by team between 11 a.m and 1 p.m.

  • Restroom facilities are available on-site for all volunteers.

  • Do Volunteers Need Any Special Skills or a Certain Level of Physical Capability? No. Everyone has something to contribute. If you have any medical conditions that prohibit you from certain activities, please let Melinda Schwartz know immediately. Building a playground is similar to putting together a puzzle and every adult can pitch in.  Many hands make light work!

  • How Will Volunteers Know Where The Bathrooms Are, When to Eat and the General Logistics of the Day? From the moment all volunteers arrive at the build, you will receive direction about the logistics of the day from our KaBOOM! Project Manager and designated team leaders (also known as Build Captains). Throughout the day, the Project Manager will provide clear updates about what has been accomplished, what remains to be done, and answer the all-important question – “when do I get to eat?”
